“I am not amused”, wie der Engländer sagen würde. Besitzer eines iMac 2011 schauen blöd aus der Wäsche, wenn sie ihren Apfel aufrüsten wollen. Ein größere Festplatte mal eben im heimischen Büro selbst einbauen? Pustekuchen! Hier liegt seitens Apple eine regelrechte Hardware-Zensur vor.

For the main 3.5″ SATA hard drive bay in the new 2011 machines, Apple has altered the SATA power connector itself from a standard 4-pin power configuration to a 7-pin configuration. Hard drive temperature control is regulated by a combination of this cable and Apple proprietary firmware on the hard drive itself. From our testing, we’ve found that removing this drive from the system, or even from that bay itself, causes the machine’s hard drive fans to spin at maximum speed and replacing the drive with any non-Apple original drive will result in the iMac failing the Apple Hardware Test (AHT).

Im Klartext: Apple verwendet für die Stromversorgung ein Kabel mit 7 Pins statt der üblichen 4 in Verbindung mit einer spezifischen Firmware. Tauscht man die Festplatte aus, um zum Beispiel mehr Speicher zu haben, besteht die neue Festplatte den Apple Hardware Test nicht. Aurüstung fehlgeschlagen!

Es bleibt dem iMac Besitzer nur der Weg über Apple, um den iMac aufzurüsten, was natürlich mit höheren Kosten verbunden ist. Da geht Apple den falschen Weg – meine Meinung.
